Cape Breton University invites applications for the role of Communicable Disease Prevention and Immunizations Clinic Nurse in the Nancy Dingwall Health and Counselling Centre. This is a part-time position.

The Nancy Dingwall Health and Counselling Centre is a collaborative health care centre with nurses (including a mental health nurse), physicians and counsellors on site working together to meet the needs of our patients.

The successful candidate will reporting to the Director of Health and Counselling, the Clinic Nurse will work with the collaborative healthcare team to provide healthcare to the campus community. Some specific duties the successful candidate may conduct but not limited is to provide vaccinations as required, plan, promote and deliver mass immunization clinics, TB skin testing clinics and other communicable disease prevention and control clinics as required.

The successful candidate will also Assist with outbreak prevention and planning for appropriate response to communicable disease outbreaks i.e. line listings and prophylactics and report statistics and evaluations of care plans directly to the director of health and counselling in a timely manner.

Required Qualifications of this role are:

  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program.
  • Registration with the Nova Scotia College of Nurses.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support – Health Care Provider (BCLS-HCP).
  • Police and vulnerable person’s safety check.
  • Minimum of five years of recent nursing care experience in public health or family practice nursing.
  • Demonstrated expertise with immunization schedules for children and adults. Able to advise staff on complex immunization schedules.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and execute mass immunization clinics.
  • Good public speaking, presentation, and health education skills.
  • Ability to work with clients of various ages, socio economic status, ethnic backgrounds, and sexual orientations using a supportive non-judgmental approach.
  • Knowledge of STI education, and treatment an asset.
  • Comfortable discussing pregnancy termination and contraception.
  • Ability to deal sensitively with clients in stressful situations. Proven critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  • Physically able to perform all assigned tasks.
  • Ability to handle periods of intense activity.
  • Excellent planning, organizational, priority-setting and time management skills.
  • Ability to be self-directed and able to exercise independent nursing judgement in a clinical situation.
  • Proven experience in dealing efficiently, professionally, and collaboratively with various professionals.
