The McCurdy Sydney Airport is seeking applications from qualified individuals for the position of Seasonal Airport Maintenance Worker. 


Reporting to the Working Foreman, the ideal candidate must be a highly motivated and engaged team player who is hard working, diligent, task and detail oriented.


This is a unionized position covered by the Collective Agreement between the Sydney Airport Authority and the Public Service Alliance of Canada.


POSITION OVERVIEW:


Airport Maintenance Workers are team players who have the ability to work cooperatively with fellow employees in operating and maintaining runways, taxiways, aprons, fields, roads, vehicles, equipment, buildings and structures on airport property and responding to aircraft emergencies as a first ARFF responder. Employees are subject to call-back / call out and be willing to work overtime as required. Shift work is required on a year round basis and includes nights and weekends. Employees are cross-trained to perform a variety of airport maintenance tasks.

  

DUTIES:

  • During winter operations, removes snow, ice and other surface contaminants from taxiways, aprons, runways, public access roads, parking areas, meteorological and telecommunications sites, boundary lights and drainage systems.
  • During non-winter operations, maintains and improves condition of taxiways, runways, aprons, roads, and other airport access areas, grass cutting, storm drainage systems, clearing culvert openings, brush control, painting, asphalt repair, sign maintenance, fence checks, etc.
  • Performs manual labour, including shoveling, mowing, ground repairs, etc.
  • Conducts bird and wildlife inspections, airfield inspections and winter aircraft movement surface condition reporting using the TRACR and TRACR AIM systems.
  • Assists qualified trade and technical personnel (electrician, plumber, mechanic, etc.) in performing a variety of maintenance and repair functions across a broad spectrum of disciplines including electrical, plumbing, heating and ventilation and mechanical to various facilities and equipment.
  • Assists in maintenance, repairs and overhaul of gasoline and diesel powered mobile and stationary equipment.
  • Operates heavy and light equipment and a variety of hand and power tools required for airport maintenance activities. 
  • Efficiently and safely operates standard and specialized vehicles and equipment under emergency conditions involving considerable hazard to combat fires and is responsible for such vehicles and equipment on emergency response in accordance with the services required by the current Canadian Aviation Regulations (CARS) and the current Aerodrome and Airport Standards respecting Aircraft Fire Fighting at Airports and Aerodromes.  
  • Performs rescue operations by providing a fire free egress route for the safe evacuation of passengers and crew and by participating to the extent possible in the evacuation of aircraft occupants.  Responses may include having to deal with hazardous materials and situations requiring medical first aid.  
  • Participates in required ARFF services training programs to meet and maintain all required ARFF certifications, standards/regulations.  
  • Prepares written reports on ARFF incidents.  Keeps abreast of current knowledge associated with apparatus, firefighting equipment and techniques.  May carry out response tests to evaluate the response time and effectiveness of the ARFF services.  
  • Conducts regular vehicle and equipment tests and checks and performs routine maintenance of firefighting vehicles and rescue equipment.  Perform such other duties as assigned to ensure the Airport Authority fully meets all of its ARFF obligations.
  • Assists in maintenance and repair to a variety of fluid pumps necessary to operate drainage systems, heating systems and fuel supply systems.
  • Performs preventative maintenance duties.
  • Monitors, tests, and records various types of fuel stored on site and provides fuel to small aircraft.
  • Complies with the safety rules, regulations, TP312 standards, directives, policies and procedures, manuals, written orders and instructions relevant to performance of work while adhering to safe work practices at all times.
  • Complies with Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP) and the Industry Canada Radio Communications License.
  • Completes other training as required, through means including self-directed learning, reading and various training sessions.
  • Possesses good communication skills, which include an ability to listen, understand and ask questions in order to understand issues and job procedures.
  • Works in a highly regulated environment with pre-determined policies and program guidelines that support the decision making process.
  • Effectively uses email, Word, Excel and various computer software programs.
  • Assists with the training new employees.
  • Maintains confidentiality of the airport operations.
  • Carries out other duties as assigned.

 

QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND CERTIFICATIONS:

The employee must possess the following qualifications, licenses, and certifications:

  • Minimum of Grade 12 education.
  • Valid Nova Scotia driver’s license.
  • Satisfactory criminal record check and security clearance.
  • Trained or willing to become trained to be qualified to perform Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) Services (training and recurrent training to be provided by the Sydney Airport Authority).
  • Obtains and maintains Airside Vehicle Operators Permit (AVOP) and the Industry Canada Radio Communications License (training to be provided by the Sydney Airport Authority).
  • Training in Confined Space Entry, First Aid & CPR, WHMIS, and Fall Arrest is considered an asset.

The employee must be knowledgeable and/or possess past experience in operations including;

  • Airfield equipment operations.
  • Airport security, airfield operations standards (TP312) and recommended practices.
  • The operation of various types of equipment
  • Familiarization with runway and surface maintenance procedures
  • Testing procedures for surface friction
  • Bird and wildlife control methods
  • Safety and security regulations
  • Materials management and inventory control

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to work for long periods of time depending on operational requirements.
  • Balance and agility to maintain a steady hand when working from scaffolds, ladders, or mobile work platforms.
  • Auditory acuity to determine proper operation of motorized equipment and identify malfunctions.
  • Olfactory acuity is required to detect odours that indicate hazardous conditions such as gas leaks or detect mechanical defects such as overheating engines.
  • Visual acuity is required to perform duties.
  • The work requires standing, walking, reaching, lifting, stretching and bending when operating on and around the Airport facilities.
  • The work requires providing aircraft rescue and firefighting (ARFF) services which includes wearing self-contained breathing apparatus and protective clothing while performing those duties.
  • The work requires operating various vehicles for lengthy periods of time, particularly during winter operations.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD:

 

If, at any time during a probationary period of twelve (12) months, the capability and/or performance and/or overall suitability of the employee filling the Airport Maintenance Worker position are not considered adequate as determined by the Director of Operations and the CEO, the employee shall be removed from the position.
