Description

Position Description: 
The Supervisor, Custodial Cleaning is responsible for providing custodial cleaning service and overseeing and managing custodial cleaning staff in the buildings, facilities and properties that are owned, operated and/or managed by New Dawn Enterprises. The Supervisors primary duties involve ensuring that sites are clean, well-maintained, and meet health and safety standards. They ensure that an adequate inventory of required equipment, products and supplies. They ensure that all work is completed in a caring and respectful manner in keeping with all relevant New Dawn Enterprises and legislative policies and procedures. 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Supervise Custodial Cleaner Staff
  • Hire, train, orientate and oversee the work completed by Custodial Cleaner staff ensuring staff are trained in the proper use of equipment, products and supplies
  • Develop schedules and assign shifts, tasks and duties based on client requirements for regular cleaning service and special requests as they occur to ensure cleaning is completed in a timely and efficient manner
  • Establish policies and procedures for a variety of buildings, facilities and properties based on best practices and to maintain high cleaning and service standards
  • Ensure that Custodial Cleaner staff follow all required policies and procedures and maintain high cleaning and service standards 
  • Conduct regular inspections of work areas to ensure adherence to safety standards, cleaning standards, and ensure proper use of equipment, products and supplies

Custodial Cleaning

  • Complete all tasks and duties required at each site according to the schedule as documented in the Custodial Cleaning Care Plan for buildings, facilities and/or property
  • Restock equipment, products and supplies as required
  • Maintain up-to-date and accurate records of cleaning work completed, as well as equipment, products and supplies and other maintenance issues
  • Custodial cleaning includes:
    • Cleaning in common areas, kitchens, dining or lunch rooms, hallways, stairways, bathrooms, offices, boardrooms and other shared spaces
    • Tidying and upkeep of outdoor spaces (i.e. garbage and debris pickup, etc.)
    • Sweeping, mopping, and polishing floors
    • Washing windows, interior walls, and ceilings
    • Cleaning cupboards, cabinets and surfaces
    • Sanitizing and disinfecting high-traffic areas such as sinks, handrails and doorknobs
    • Collecting and gathering garbage and recyclables
    • Ensuring that garbage and recyclables are placed in the correct receptacles

Supply Management

  • Maintain adequate stock of cleaning equipment, products and supplies including keeping documentation and records of inventory and orders
  • Inform Manager of damage to any equipment, products and supplies including need for repairs or replacement
  • Ensure equipment, products and supplies are properly maintained, serviced, and repaired as needed including keeping documentation and records of repairs and maintenance 
  • Complete and update documentation such as policies, inspections, checklists, etc.   

Health & Safety

  • Ensure adherence to occupational health and safety standards and regulations including the proper use equipment, products and supplies
  • Demonstrate basic safety practices including proper use of equipment, products and supplies maintaining safe storage, use of caution signage, to prevent accidents and/or injuries in the workplace
  • Inform Director of any safety concerns and/or unsafe work situations and follow preventative or remedial actions recommended to address concerns
  • Serve as an active member of the New Dawn JOH&SC  
  • Ensure that all required Personal Protective Equipment is used by all staff as required, especially when working with chemicals and substances
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards, including WHMIS 

Other Duties & Responsibilities

  • Participate in internal team meetings as required
  • Look for potential improvements and help implement solutions 
  • Maintain quality, safety and the confidentiality of employees, clients, and volunteers
  • Maintain professionalism, tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity so as to portray New Dawn in a positive manner, consistent with its values and vision

Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent
  • Minimum three (3) years experience commercial cleaning
  • Minimum one (1) year supervisory experience
  • Valid and up-to-date First Aid & CPR certification
  • Valid and up-to-date WHMIS certification
  • Successful completion of Bloodborne Pathogens training
  • Successful completion of Preventing Musculoskeletal Injuries training
  • Proficiency with Microsoft suite of programs and applications 
  • Clear criminal records check including vulnerable sector search

Working Conditions:

  • The job often requires physical stamina to endure extended periods of standing and walking, performing continuous physical tasks for the majority of the shift including walking between different areas of buildings and properties
  • Physical ability to lift and carry up to fifty pounds (50 lbs)
  • Bending, kneeling, and squatting to clean low surfaces such as floors, baseboards, vents, to clean debris, etc.
  • Ability to climb ladders or step stools to reach high areas such as shelves, windows, light fixtures, or ceiling fans
  • Repetitive motions such as sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, or operating cleaning equipment
  • Manual dexterity to handle and operate equipment properly
  • May require the ability to work in confined or tight spaces (i.e. utility rooms, or crawl spaces)
  • Physical ability to handle cleaning chemicals properly and safely including transport, use and disposal of chemicals
  • Comfort working in various physical environments, including exposure to dust, noise, cleaning chemicals, and temperature changes (hot or cold environments depending on location and season)
  • Travel between sites is required
  • Overtime may be required; working evenings/weekends as needed
  • Interacts with employees, management, and the public at large

Total Compensation Package

Reduced Hours Work Week
In recognition of the benefits of greater work-life balance and the value of flexibility and autonomy for human wellbeing, New Dawn has adopted a Reduced Hour Work Week. All full-time salaried employees are required to work thirty-two (32) hours per week. These hours can be worked over four (4) or five (5) days. At the start of employment, a schedule will be determined to meet the needs of the company and the employee. 

 

Paid Vacation

All full-time salaried employees are entitled to one hundred and twenty (120) hours of paid vacation, annually. 

 

Paid Mental & Physical Health Days

All full-time salaried employees are entitled to fifty-six (56) hours of paid leave for mental and physical health, annually. These days can be used to take time off work for physical and/or mental wellness/illness, and to attend appointments for the employee and/or their dependents.

 

Paid Holidays

New Dawn observes the following thirteen (13) public holidays: New Year’s Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Civic Holiday, Labour Day, National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Thanksgiving Day, Remembrance Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day.

 

In the spirit of family, the President & CEO reserves the right to close New Dawn administrative offices between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day to enable employees to spend time with their families without requiring them to use vacation hours. This decision is reviewed annually based on operational requirements. 

 

Group Health Employee Benefits
Group benefits for employees and dependents are provided by Group Health. Fifty percent (50%) of benefit premiums are paid by the employer, with the exception of Long-Term Disability where benefit premiums are paid fully (100%) by the employee. 

 

Self-Directed Registered Retirement Savings Plan  
New Dawn offers salaried employees retirement savings matching for self-directed retirement savings plans after completion of three (3) months of employment. Employees may choose to contribute up to 5% of their gross salary to a retirement savings plan, deducted from their pay cheque. Contributions are matched by the Employer to a maximum of five percent (5%).
