Salary: Annual salary starting at $100,000 – negotiable
based on commensurate knowledge and experience

Reporting to the Vice President/Owner, the Controller will lead all financial operations for Brilun Construction and their group of companies. This pivotal role oversees the entire accounting function, from daily general ledger and month/year-end close, to ensuring timely and accurate consolidated financial statements. The Controller is responsible for, but not limited to, managing complex construction and project accounting, including refining job costing systems and overseeing WIP and revenue recognition, driving strategic financial planning through robust budgeting, cash flow forecasting, and developing insightful performance metrics to support executive decision-making and strategic growth initiatives.
Core Accountabilities:
Financial Management & Reporting
- Oversee all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and fixed assets across the entire group of companies.
- Manage the month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring timely and accurate preparation of consolidated and individual entity financial statements.
- Develop, analyze, and present monthly and quarterly financial reports to senior management, including variance analysis and performance metrics.
- Coordinate the annual external compilation and review engagement with external accounting firms.
- Provide insights and recommendations to aid strategic growth initiatives.
- Identify areas for improvement in financial procedures and implement best practices.
- Manage and refine job costing systems and procedures to accurately track costs, revenue, and profitability per project.
- Oversee Work-in-Progress (WIP) reporting and revenue recognition for construction contracts.
- Monitor and manage construction draw processes and loan requisitions with financial institutions.
- Develop and implement internal controls specific to the construction environment to safeguard company assets and ensure accurate financial data.
- Manage daily cash flow forecasting and planning for the group.
- Track key performance indicators (KPIs), analyze financial performance, and prepare reports to support strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate with leadership and external advisors to evaluate financial stability, valuation, and integration strategies.
- Lead the preparation of the annual operating budgets and financial forecasts.
- Monitor company liquidity and capital expenditure requirements across all entities.
- Manage relationships with banking partners and other financial institutions.
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and provincial tax regulations (HST/GST, payroll remittances, corporate taxes, etc.).
- Manage intercompany transactions and eliminations between the various entities in the group.
- Lead, mentor, and supervise the accounting and finance staff.
- Evaluate and implement opportunities for process and system improvements within the accounting function, leveraging construction-specific or ERP software.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a similar field is required.
- Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in progressive accounting roles is required.
- Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation in Nova Scotia is required.
- Project management experience or knowledge is considered an asset.
- Knowledge of local business environment and tax regulations in Nova Scotia is considered an asset.
- Previous accounting experience within the construction industry is considered an asset.
- Previous experience using QuickBooks software and Procore Construction software is considered an asset.
- Proven experience in job costing, WIP accounting, and multi-entity consolidation is preferred.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial modeling.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to clearly present complex financial data to non-financial stakeholders (e.g., project managers, senior executives).
- Demonstrated leadership ability and experience managing a small accounting team.
- High degree of integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced, dynamic construction environment.
- Exceptional time-management and organizational skills.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and guide teams effectively.
- Reliable vehicle and own transportation are required.
