Description

Location: Remote / Flexible after initial onboarding period at our office in Sydney. Some in-person work may be required on occasion.
Hours: Approximately 40-55 hours per month or 1-2 days/week (schedule flexible)
Compensation: Starting at $26/hour, commensurate with experience and upper end negotiable with a strong candidate

Position Overview

The Bookkeeper will be responsible for managing accurate bookkeeping in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. This role requires strong organizational skills, professional judgment, and the ability to work independently.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records in bookkeeping software

  • Expense management & coding (with ED and staff support) - review and code expenses to appropriate accounts

  • Monthly bank and credit card reconciliations

  • Accounts payable & receivable: process invoices, ensure timely payments, track receivables

  • Ensure compliance with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO)

  • Maintain fixed asset and depreciation schedules

  • Support the Executive Director year-end financial processes and external audit preparation

  • Support the Executive Director in monitoring and tracking grant revenues and expenses

Required Qualifications

  • Previous bookkeeping experience required  

  • Proficiency with accounting software: experience with Sage Accounting is strongly preferred

  • Strong understanding of bookkeeping principles and financial record-keeping

  • Excellent organization, time management, and attention to detail

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to exercise discretion, confidentiality, and sound judgment

  • Familiarity with Canadian charitable accounting practices, or willingness to learn

  • Be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

Qualifications which are assets, but not required to apply:

  • Diploma or degree in business administration

  • Experience working with not-for-profit organizations or charities
