Volunteer Position
Opportunity Overview
The New Waterford and District Historical Society is seeking a detail-oriented individual with a financial background to serve as Treasurer on its Board of Directors. This volunteer role is ideal for someone who wants to apply their financial expertise in a governance setting while supporting the preservation and promotion of local history.
The Treasurer plays a key leadership role in maintaining the Society’s financial integrity, supporting compliance requirements, and ensuring transparent financial reporting to the Board.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide oversight of the Society’s overall financial health
- Prepare, review, and present the annual financial report
- Manage and track organizational funding, grants, and expenditures
- Maintain financial records using QuickBooks
- Oversee summer employee payroll, ensuring accurate and timely processing
- Provide oversight of CRA accounts, including filings, remittances, and compliance
- Present financial updates at Board meetings
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
- Help ensure appropriate financial policies, controls, and best practices are followed
Qualifications & Skills
- Background in finance, accounting, bookkeeping, or a related field
- Experience using QuickBooks or similar accounting software
- Familiarity with payroll processes and CRA requirements, or willingness to learn
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to explain financial information clearly to Board members
- Previous board or nonprofit experience is an asset
Time Commitment
- Attendance at regular Board meetings, 4-6 annually
- Additional time during budget preparation and year-end reporting periods

Board Composition
Composition: The Board of Directors shall consist of a minimum of five (5) and a maximum of ten (10) members.
Election and Term: Directors shall be elected at the annual meeting by a majority vote of the members present. Directors shall serve a term of two (2) years and may be re-elected.
Duties: The Board of Directors shall oversee the management of the Society, including setting policies, approving budgets, and ensuring the Society’s activities align with its mission.
Meetings: The Board of Directors shall meet at least quarterly. Additional meetings may be called by the President as needed.
Quorum: A quorum for the transaction of business at any meeting of the Board of Directors shall be a majority of the Directors.
