• POSITION TITLE: Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator
• DEPARTMENT: Wastewater Operation
• LOCATION: Various
• REPORTING TO: Supervisor, Wastewater Operations
• BARGAINING UNIT: CUPE Local 759
• SALARY: $31.42 per hour

JOB SCOPE

Under the direction of the Supervisor of Wastewater Operations, performs a variety of skilled technical and maintenance work in the operation, maintenance and repair of all facilities, equipment, and operating systems.

MAIN FUNCTIONS:

• Monitors and evaluates the performance of all process and control equipment related to treatment plants, sewage pump stations, lagoons, septic systems and buildings. Monitors and records statistical data concerning plant operations, maintains, operates, repairs, and replaces equipment as necessary, charts laboratory and system test results for trend analysis and reporting. Maintains accurate records of analysis and test results, establishes databases, and writes reports as required.
• Track, schedule and perform job tasks including inspection, maintenance and repair activities including detailed record keeping on a computerized maintenance management system.
• Recommends process control, implementation procedure and efficiencies.
• Monitors and operates facilities with visual inspections, by performing tests, through use of remote monitoring systems (VTScada) and through other methods assuring process control or related remote plant operations.
• Provides the required labour to inspect, operate, maintain, and repair equipment malfunctions at the plant/facility or any wastewater collection, treatment, storage, and conveyance systems.
• Collects samples and identifies concentrations of chemical, physical or biological characteristics of wastewater streams in accordance with Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Climate Change (NSECC) requirements and other approved standards.
• Performs quality control tests on lab equipment and lab analysis, evaluates procedures and results for accuracy and determines appropriate methods.
• Assures that plant/facility operates within required standards.
• Performs housekeeping chores to keep the site grounds and buildings in a clean-and-tidy condition.
• Contains and disposes of hazardous waste streams generated by the laboratory and/or various plant operations.
• Operates and maintains pump stations, building systems, and HVAC systems. Cleans wet wells and operates pumps, compressors and valves to control and adjust flow and treatment process.
• Performs all duties and provides direction in compliance with established safety practices, policies and procedures.
• Direct sub-contractors working on a specific site in consultation with Supervisor.
• Performs "on call" duties as required utilizing cellular phone.
• Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (MUST INCLUDE COPIES OF THE ITEMS LISTED BELOW)

• Completion of Grade 12 or GED equivalent.
• Environmental Engineering Technology diploma. Educational equivalents may be considered.
• Certification in NSECC Wastewater Treatment up to Level III with the ability to obtain Level III once combination of education and experience is acquired. Certification in NSECC Wastewater Collection Level II or the ability to obtain it within three years in the position.
• Valid Nova Scotia Driver’s license.
• Criminal Records Check verification is required as a condition of employment. Vulnerable sector check may also be required for those working with vulnerable populations. This will be requested at a later date.
• Medical assessments including but not limited to physical, vision, and hearing tests may be required. The assessments must show the capacity of performing tasks of the classification. This will take place at a later date.

• WHMIS/GHS 2015 Training
• Nova Scotia Confined Space Entrant Attendant Training

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

• Working knowledge of equipment, facilities, materials, methods and procedures used in plant/facility maintenance and operation activities. Working knowledge of laboratory procedures and practices.
• General understanding and working knowledge of plumbing and pressure systems.
• Skill in operation of process control instrumentation, small tools and related equipment.
• Ability to perform process control calculations; to effectively communicate verbally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments and the public.
• Ability to work safely and to wear and operate safety PPE such as harnesses, lanyards, face masks and self-contained breathing apparatuses.
• Ability to operate computer with reference to Microsoft Windows operating system, web browser navigation, and Microsoft Office Suite software.
• Ability to climb more than 15 meters.
• Ability to enter and perform various tasks within a confined space (as defined by NS Labour Standards).
• Ability to handle chemicals relative to sewage operations in a safe prescribed manner and consistent with defined NS Labour Standards.
• Ability to successfully complete safety training courses relating to sewage system operations.
