The Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce is the voice of business in CBRM, representing businesses across the region. We're looking for a CEO to lead the organization, drive our strategic plan and be a trusted voice for the local business community. 

Since 1911, the Cape Breton Regional Chamber of Commerce has supported businesses across the Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) through advocacy, events, connections, education, promotion and community leadership. As a private sector-led, not-for-profit, non-partisan organization, the Chamber works to ensure local businesses are heard, supported and positioned to succeed. 

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) holds a high-profile, exciting leadership role in the CBRM. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for delivering on the organization's mission and values while serving as a trusted, positive voice for the local business community. 

The CEO is responsible for developing and implementing the Chamber's strategic plan and an annual operational plan to achieve organizational growth and positively impact the business community year over year. They have the authority to direct the planning and implementation of all organizational events, initiatives, programs and services and are responsible for the management of team members and volunteers.

The Chamber exists to support its members. Its role is to be unwavering in supporting business growth in CBRM through engaging in and influencing public policy, creating meaningful connections in the business community and nurturing ideas that impact the region's economic future. 

 

What we're looking for: 

  • 3+ years in a leadership role; experience working at a not-for-profit organization is an asset 
  • Undergraduate degree in a business-related field or equivalent experience 
  • Strong communication, event management and advocacy skills 
  • Experience with financial management, budgeting and financial reporting is considered an asset

Responsibilities 

The CEO occupies a high-profile leadership role in the organization, ensuring its sustainability and relevance across the following areas: 

Strategic Leadership and Organizational Vision 

  • Develop and implement the Chamber's strategic plan and yearly operational plan in collaboration with the Board 
  • Represent the business community as per the Chamber mandate 
  • Provide leadership that supports the Chamber's continued growth, sustainability and relevance within the business community 

Financial Management 

  • Prepare the annual operating budget and present it to the Board for approval 
  • Maintain accurate financial records and reporting in line with not-for-profit accounting practices 
  • Oversee cash flow, accounts payable and receivable, and payroll 
  • Monitor revenue streams, including membership dues, sponsorships and event revenue, against budget 
  • Coordinate the annual external audit or financial review with the Board Treasurer  
  • Ensure timely and accurate regulatory and financial filings on behalf of the organization 
  • Provide regular financial updates to the Board and Finance Committee 

Human Resource Management 

  • Manage the recruitment, development, retention and performance of all team members 
  • Foster a positive and supportive workplace that encourages employee engagement and retention 
  • Coordinate and support the Chamber's volunteer base 

Advocacy, Reputation and Media Management 

  • Serve as the voice of the CBRM business community with government and media 
  • Lead advocacy efforts on issues affecting the local business community 

External Communications and Partnerships 

  • Build and maintain relationships with government, community and business partners 

Board Governance 

  • Support the Board of Directors in fulfilling its governance responsibilities 

Program and Event Management 

  • Direct the planning and delivery of all Chamber events, initiatives, programs and services 

Qualifications 

  • Undergraduate degree in a business-related field or demonstrated equivalent experience 
  • 3+ years in a leadership role 
  • Experience working at a not-for-profit organization is an asset 
  • Comprehensive understanding of how to implement a strategic plan 
  • Ability to deliver on strategic and operational objectives 
  • Strong customer service focus 
  • Strong oral and written communication skills 
  • Experience with financial management, budgeting and financial reporting is considered an asset 
  • Past experience in marketing and sales is an asset
