Dalhousie University and Cape Breton University have partnered to establish the Cape Breton Medical Campus (CBMC) in Sydney, Nova Scotia, with the first cohort of learners set to be admitted in 2025. CBMC is dedicated to enhancing healthcare in rural communities by increasing the number of family physicians and specialists, advancing a preventative and collaborative care model, and creating opportunities for interdisciplinary education and research. A key partner in the Nova Scotia Health Innovation Hub, CBMC is also a leader in rural clinical trials and aging-related research.

As part of this commitment, CBMC is seeking an Assistant Dean, Professional Affairs to provide leadership in creating and maintaining a healthy learning environment within the Faculty of Medicine.

The Assistant Dean, Professional Affairs (OPA) will provide academic and administrative leadership to address learner mistreatment and promote professionalism across medical education programs. Reporting to the Senior Associate Dean, CBMC, and working collaboratively with the broader Faculty of Medicine, the Assistant Dean will oversee initiatives that support professionalism and ensure that learning environments align with institutional policies and best practices.

Key responsibilities include receiving and addressing reports of professionalism breaches, particularly in relation to learner mistreatment, and ensuring timely communication throughout the complaint resolution process. The Assistant Dean will develop and oversee outreach and education initiatives related to professionalism, collaborating with stakeholders within the Faculty of Medicine, as well as regional health authorities and other medical education partners. They will also maintain a database of learner mistreatment reports, track trends to identify areas for improvement, and provide annual reports on the learning environment to leadership.

In addition to co-leading the Office of Professional Affairs, the Assistant Dean will serve on various committees, including the Anti-Oppression Committee and the Council of Associate & Assistant Deans, providing oversight of administrative staff and budgets related to professionalism initiatives. The role also involves updating and maintaining policies on learner mistreatment and ensuring compliance with accreditation standards.

This role is a 0.2 FTE role and the ability to work flexible hours within the CBMC schedule structure is a requirement

Some required qualifications but not limited to are:

  •  MD degree required;
  •  Master’s degree in Education or Medical Education is considered an asset
  • Active academic appointment in the Faculty of Medicine;
  •  Experience in/with Policy and procedural administration, Working in a diverse community, work with stakeholders, Handling sensitive, confidential information, Working with learner mistreatment issues.
  •  Demonstrated competencies of objectivity and impartiality, trust and integrity, Ability to work in a diplomatic and credible manner, Listening and crisis intervention skills and Leadership competencies
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule;
  •  Experience as departmental clerkship director an asset;
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel) and database systems is required;
  • Knowledge of Brightspace, One45 and Sharepoint would be considered an asset
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to organize and prioritize workloads, as well as the ability to work independently and multi-task in a deadline driven, team environment;
  • Knowledge of medical education programs and/or academic health care environment would be beneficial
