Description

ACAP Cape Breton is seeking a skilled Project Coordinator for a full-time or part-time limited-term position, starting in March 2025.

The successful candidate will oversee program planning and delivery for a new education project called “Riparian Zone Ready.” The scope of work will include ongoing program support and education/training for youth groups and school groups across the island. The position requires skills in outdoor education and the ability to support environmental field science and applied learning. The position also includes communication with youth group leaders, teachers, other community organizations, including Mi’kmaw organizations, and with municipalities and councils.

The Project Coordinator reports to the Education Manager, who is based at our Sydney office.

Preference may be given to candidates residing outside of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality, in Richmond, Victoria, or Inverness counties. Travel throughout the island will be required, with an anticipated 5-10 days on the road each month from May to October and less frequent travel in other months. Access to a vehicle is required and mileage will be compensated.

Work hours: We anticipate a 0.8-1.0 full-time equivalent position, which is 28-35 hours per week (based on selected candidate preference and availability). While most of the work will take place during weekdays, there will be some weekend and evening work.

We anticipate a start date between March 1st and March 31st, 2025. We will start notifying candidates selected for interviews in mid-February and encourage interested candidates to apply early. Closing date: February 24, 2025.

The main responsibilities of the position include:

  • Working with the Education Manager to implement a new education program, providing youth (12-25 years) with hands-on experience in environmental monitoring and restoration.
  • Coordinating program events and meetings, both internally at ACAP and externally with youth groups, schools, and municipal council. In late spring 2025, the coordinator will lead a 1-day youth summit, with significant programming support from other team members.
  • Supervising basic field work with youth participants.
  • Liaising with other staff and community members to integrate environmental science into the learning program.
  • Working with diverse organizational partners, from schools to municipalities to Mi’kmaq organizations to provincial and national environmental organizations.
  • Supporting project evaluation and reporting.

Required skills and experience:

  • Experience working in environmental education, communication, and/or community engagement. Volunteer and part-time experience counts.
  • Enthusiasm for working with children, youth, and other community members.
  • Experience working outdoors; outdoor education experience and/or outdoor fieldwork experience are strong assets.
  • An environmental science background, through formal or informal education or direct experience, is a strong asset.
  • Flexibility, creativity, and problem-solving. Many project activities occur outdoors and can require last-minute adjustments due to weather conditions, sudden unavailability of community partners or other challenges.
  • Ability to work outdoors for up to seven hours at a time and participate in fieldwork, including lifting equipment up to 20 kg.
  • Strict adherence to safety protocols, in particular for outdoor activities with minors.
  • Respect for different means of learning, including culturally diverse modes, neurodiversity, physical adaptations required to participate in outdoor learning, etc.
  • Incorporating a lens of environmental justice, including respect for Indigenous land rights.
  • Ability to work with a team and learn from others’ knowledge and experience. This is a team where we’re not afraid to respond “I don’t know” to a question or problem and seek others’ advice. Commitment to continuous learning is a core ACAP element.
  • Willingness to undertake a Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Persons Sector and willingness to obtain First Aid Training, if not already certified.
