Tajikeimɨk is searching for an experienced finance professional to join their mission-driven organization and play a key role in their financial success! Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Manager of Accounting will initially support the transition from an outsourced finance contractor to an internal finance department. Initial role responsibilities may include the implementation of an ERP system, development of financial procedures to support policy, and training junior staff members. Once the department is fully established, the Manager of Accounting will be responsible for preparing accurate and reliable financial information and reports to internal and external stakeholders on a monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc basis. This includes providing hands-on support to the daily financial functions of the organization, while helping to build a finance team and providing oversight and leadership to the junior finance team.
What you’ll do:
Specific responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:
- Support the Director of Finance by preparing monthly, quarterly, annual and ad hoc financial reports for internal and external stakeholders
Oversee accounts payables functions including online payments and EFTs - Ensure expenditures are appropriately tracked and allocated between ongoing projects based on funding agreement requirements
- Oversee invoices, and prepare expense claims and payment approvals for signing authorities, ensuring timely payment to vendors
- Prepare monthly banking and credit card account reconciliations for review by management
- Support the preparation and analyzing of financial statements, including income statements, balance sheets and cashflow statements
- Prepare general ledger account reconciliations with supporting working papers
- Prepare month end accruals and journal entries
- Support the preparation of and monitor budgets, including actively monitoring expenditures, identifying variance analyses, and reporting to management as required
- Monitor cashflow to ensure the organization can meet its financial obligations and maintain operational stability
- Implement, enhance, and maintain internal controls and safeguards for receipt of funding, costs, budgets, and actual expenditures.
- Evaluate, maintain and recommend enhancements for finance functions
- Ensure technology platforms are leveraged to enhance efficiency of reports and functions
- Prepare for and co-ordinate the annual audit, gathering necessary information and documentation and ensuring financial records are in order, and ensuring effective resolution and swift closure of auditing activities
- Maintain manual and electronic filing systems, including the management of financial records and receipts
- Ensure adherence to financial policies and procedures, funding partner requirements and applicable laws while ensuring operational efficiency and effectiveness
- Other responsibilities, as may be requested by management.
Your qualifications:
- Degree or diploma in Business Administration or Commerce (or similar) with a major or concentration in Finance or Accounting
- Successful completion of a professional accounting designation (CPA or similar), or aspiring student (a strong asset)
- Minimum 4 years’ experience in combination with a professional accounting
designation (CPA), or 8 years’ experience without a professional accounting designation - Experience in a similar role in a non-profit or First Nation governance organization, including supporting the finance function across both restricted and non restricted funds
- Experience with financial reporting, budgeting, financial planning and analysis
- Experience providing oversight, training and leadership to junior staff members
- Experience working with internal and external stakeholders, such as auditors
- Knowledge of relevant laws, regulations and compliance requirements of non-profit organizations
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)

- Cultural awareness and sensitivity, demonstrating sound work ethic
- Knowledge of and ability to utilize PowerBI or Tableau
- Personal experience as a Mi’kmaw person and/or professional experience in a Mi’kmaw setting; community or organization; and knowledge of Mi’kmaw culture values, and traditions (strongly preferred)
- Excellent organization, analytical, trouble shooting, time management and problem-solving abilities
- Must demonstrate tact, initiative, accountability, and reliability in daily activities and an understanding for confidentiality
Salary: to be negotiated based on experience.
Location: Millbrook or Membertou with the possibility of a hybrid at home working model.

In collaboration with Chiefs, Grand Council, and Health Directors, Tajikeimɨk will build on and evolve the health and wellness services and programs used by Mi’kmaw people in Nova Scotia; improve health service delivery; and strengthen coordination with Federal and Provincial health system partners—with the goal of improving overall health for Mi’kmaq and communities.
