Position: Cook & Shift Supervisor

Location: 471 Mahon St, New Waterford, NS

Reports to: New Waterford Drop In Manager

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $45,000.00-$48,000.00 per year

Schedule:

  • 8 hour shift
  • Monday to Friday

Authority: Responsible for the management and operation of the kitchen and storage rooms, as well as the volunteer personnel responsible for weekly food preparation and serving. Fill in for Manager as required.

Scope of Position: Souls Harbour Rescue Mission prepares and serves up to 160,000 meals annually, spread over multiple Drop In locations: Halifax, Bridgewater, Truro, Sackville, Sydney Mines, Amherst and now New Waterford, 6 days a week. The Cook is key to our successful execution of up to 100 meals daily in New Waterford and larger crowds for holiday meals, 4 times a year using predominantly donated foods and volunteer labour. The Cook will love the challenge and creative license to work on a timeline with donated ingredients. They will be passionate about feeding men, women and children who struggle with food insecurity. Souls Harbour is a vibrant, young fast-growing faith-based organization with an entrepreneurial spirit and a company culture driven by our core values of evangelism, discipleship, charity (love and good deeds) and expansion. The New Waterford Drop In Centre, specifically, is brand new so developing a warm atmosphere where men, women and children love to visit will be very important. The Cook is the primary person who will continue to drive this culture of radical hospitality in our food services department. This person will lead the Drop In Centre when the Manager is away.

Non-Negotiable Requirements:

  • Quantity cooking experience for large crowds of 100+
  • Food safety handlers and first aid (we can assist in providing if necessary)
  • Experience in leading groups and working with volunteers
  • Ability to handle crisis situations
  • Ability to enforce the rules without losing your patience
  • Agree to respect the mission and doctrinal statements as outlined in the attached staff manual.

Qualifications:

  • Creative: Able to make soup from donated food
  • Adaptable: Ability to remain calm under pressure
  • Flexible: able to work short staffed and remain calm.
  • Leadership: Willing to train and work largely with a constantly rotating volunteer staff
  • Physically Fit: Able to stand for long periods of time and lift 25 lbs
  • Possess good personal organization, prioritization and time management skills
  • Self disciplined. Able to work quickly, accurately, and safely
  • Clean work and hygiene habits

Objectives:

  • To prepare tasty, nutritious, well-balanced meals using donated ingredients.
  • To ensure the afternoon drop in is running smoothly and needs are being met.

Specific Duties:

  • Prepare flexible menus that can change based on incoming food donations
  • Organize kitchen volunteers including food inventories, kitchen food prep, pantry and kitchen storage areas, scoopers and dish pit areas
  • Keep food service areas organized with FIFO principles
  • Ensure a wholesome meal is prepared and served for all mission meals
  • Supervise drop in centre volunteers when Manager is away
  • Other duties as assigned by Manager

Ability to commute/relocate:

  • New Waterford, NS: reliably commute or plan to relocate before starting work (required)

Experience: Cooking: 2 years (required)

Licence/Certification:

  • Food Safe, SafeCheck, Food Handler or equivalent (preferred)

Work Location: In person
