Position Title/Classification: Recreation Program Coordinator – Child & Youth
Department: Recreation, Buildings, Parks & Grounds and
Facilities
Reporting to: Recreation Manager
Bargaining Unit: CUPE Local 933 (Inside Workers)
Salary: $31.51 / hour
JOB SCOPE:
MAIN FUNCTIONS:
- Identify the nature and scope of programs and special events offered in designated portfolio within CBRM by completing and maintaining a complete inventory of current programs. This inventory will also include the current and proposed methods of funding.
- To ensure satisfactory recreational programming and special events by implementing established policies, procedures, and standards to meet the identified needs of the community.
- To promote community involvement in programming and special events by working with community groups, organizations, and individuals to build capacity and provide support for programming needs.
- To establish and coordinate the delivery of recreational services for people of all ages, needs and abilities and in accordance with the Municipal Recreation Master Plan and Physical Activity Strategy.
- To coordinate and manage part time staff and volunteers to deliver recreation programs and special events within the region.
- To coordinate scheduling of municipally operated facilities within the region.
- Monitor recreation trends and community socio/cultural/economic factors to facilitate the development and implementation of relevant programs and services. Conduct research and prepare written reports to communicate progress and recommendations.
- Perform administrative tasks including project evaluations, budget preparation and financial reporting.
- To be knowledgeable of the CBRM Active Transportation Plan and its impact on the region.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Must include copies of the items listed below)
- Degree in Recreation or similar, plus three years of experience in recreational services.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Must possess and maintain a valid NS Driver’s License and have access to a vehicle.
- Medical assessments including but not limited to physical, vision, and hearing tests may be required. The assessments must show the capacity of performing tasks of the classification.
- Criminal Records Check and Vulnerable Sector Check verification are required as a condition of employment.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of current national and provincial trends and strategies for recreation.
- Experience in working with volunteers and community organizations.
- Experience working with vulnerable populations and individuals with varying abilities.
- Working knowledge of physical literacy, fundamental movement skills, the long-term development model, and physical activity guidelines for all ages.
- Ability to coordinate and implement programs and special events.
- Good knowledge of computer programs used in recreation services such as Microsoft Office, recreation facility and program management software.
- Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public, internal and external agencies, and address varied audiences on topics related to programs and needs.
- Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, community groups and the public.
- Experience in digital and social media communications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Emergency First Aid – CPR & Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification would be an asset.
- Knowledge of the SAP system would be considered an asset.
