Position Title/Classification: Utility Service – Compost Facility Operator
Department: Solid Waste
Reporting to: Supervisor, Waste Management Facility
Location: Solid Waste Facilities
Bargaining Unit: CUPE 759
Salary: $29.56 / hour
JOB SCOPE: Reporting to the Supervisor of the Waste Management Facility or his designate performs a variety of tasks associated with the operations and maintenance of compost facility.
MAIN FUNCTIONS:
- Ensures the proper control of materials and direction of traffic at the Composting Facility.
- Performs routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and work areas and provides both verbal and written reports of conditions.
- Assists with the replacement, repair and installation of materials or equipment.
- Inspects & monitors for compliance, loads of material delivered to the Compost Facility, to ensure compliance with facility rules, sorting requirements and the Nova Scotia Department of Environment regulations.
- Provides required labour for tasks associated with the operation and routine maintenance of the Compost Facility.
- Operates equipment associated with processing of wastes at the Compost Facility.
- Ability to operates computer & scale equipment associated with processing of compost at the Facility.
- Performs housekeeping chores to keep the site grounds and buildings in a clean and tidy condition.
- Performs duties in compliance with established safety practices, policies, and regulations.
- Performs other duties as assigned by Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:(Must include copies of the items listed below)
- Grade 12 or GED equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Nova Scotia Driver’s License.
- Medical assessments including but not limited to physical, vision, and hearing tests may be required. The assessments must show the capacity of performing tasks of the classification.
- Successful medical pre-screen is required including TB testing.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Ability to operate a variety of equipment associated with the operation of the Composting Facility.
- Ability to work safely.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
- Skill in the operation of small tools.
- Knowledge of the equipment, materials, methods, and procedures used in the operation of the Composting Facility.
- Ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with other employees and the public.
ADDITIONAL COURSES
- Emergency First Aid/CPR Level A/AED.
- WHMIS/GHS 2015 Course.
- Nova Scotia Confined Space Entrant Course/Attendant Training.
- Nova Scotia Fall Protection Training.
- Nova Scotia Elevated Work Platform (EWP) Training.
- Safe Forklift Operator Training.
