Tajikeimɨk is seeking a consultant with extensive experience in Indigenous Storywork to collaborate with Mi'kmaw communities, Elders, knowledge keepers, traditional harvesters, and medicine people. Reporting to the Director of Mental Wellness and Healing, the consultant will support the collection and sharing of
stories and teachings related to L'nui-Npisun (Mi'kmaw Medicine), ensuring the preservation and respectful transmission of this knowledge.

What you’ll do:

Specific responsibilities will include, but will not be limited to:

  • Collaborating with Mi'kmaw Elders, knowledge keepers, traditional harvesters,
    and medicine people to gather, document, and preserve stories and teachings
    related to L'nui-Npisun (Mi'kmaw Medicine).
  • Facilitating culturally sensitive and respectful conversations to ensure the
    accurate sharing of traditional knowledge and practices.
  • Ensuring the integrity of Mi'kmaw cultural knowledge is preserved while capturing
    the context and significance of each story.
  • Working with community members to create materials that honour and reflect the
    wisdom passed down through generations.
  • Providing recommendations for culturally appropriate methods of sharing and
    transmitting the gathered knowledge to future generations.
  • Supporting the development of resources that ensure the teachings of L'nui-Npisun are
    accessible in a respectful and meaningful manner.

Your qualifications:

  • A deep understanding and respect for Mi'kmaw culture, traditions, and teachings, with a focus
    on L'nui-Npisun (Mi'kmaw Medicine).
  • Experience in Indigenous Storywork, cultural documentation, or a related field, with an emphasis on
    ethical and culturally sensitive practices.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage respectfully with Elders,
    knowledge keepers, and community members.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with diverse community groups, ensuring the preservation and transmission of Indigenous knowledge.
  • Experience in working with Indigenous communities and a demonstrated commitment to fostering cultural integrity and community empowerment.
  • Ability to speak Mi’kmaw a requirement.
  • Ability to write Mi’kmaw considered an asset.
  • Familiarity with ethical considerations in the handling and sharing of Indigenous
    knowledge, including issues of consent and cultural protocols.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, based on program
    needs.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel throughout Nova Scotia.
  • An up-to-date criminal record check.

    traditional knowledge to future generations in a culturally relevant and
    sustainable way.
  • A professional who is open to learning, adapting, and working collaboratively
  • within the values and worldview of Mi'kmaw culture

Salary: to be negotiated based on experience.

The organization:
Tajikeimɨk is the new and developing health and wellness organization being created to
lead health transformation on behalf of Mi’kmaw communities in Nova Scotia. In collaboration with
Chiefs, Grand Council, and Health Directors, Tajikeimɨk will build on and evolve the health and
wellness services and programs used by Mi’kmaw people in Nova Scotia; improve health service
delivery; and strengthen coordination with Federal and Provincial health system partners—with
the goal of improving overall health for Mi’kmaq and communities.
