Position Title: Utility Service – Parks & Grounds - Central / Temporary Full Time

Salary: $29.56 / hour

JOB SCOPE

Under the direction of the Supervisor and/or designate, performs turf maintenance, horticultural and arboricultural procedures for the Region’s Parks and Grounds division.

MAIN FUNCTIONS

  • Performs turf maintenance, horticultural and arboricultural procedures as outlined in the performance standards.
  • Performs general maintenance duties including grass cutting, infield grooming and repairs, fencing and structural repairs, garbage collection, painting, and cleaning of assigned indoor facilities, leaf and clipping control and snow removal.
  • Operates power equipment such as trucks, tractors, power equipment and power hand tools.
  • Fabrication and installation of play space fixtures such as fences, bleachers, player benches, backstops and play apparatus.
  • Ensures the proper use, care and accountability for all equipment and materials assigned to him/her for use in the park service.
  • Ensures safety for self, other employees, and the public, wearing proper safety equipment and operating all equipment and tools to the highest safety standards.
  • Provide support and guidance to assigned temporary/student employees who may be available to support the maintenance of park service.
  • Performs minor equipment repairs and adjustments.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:(Must include copies of the items listed below)

  • A minimum of Grade XII or GED equivalent.
  • Experience in turf maintenance, horticulture, and outdoor maintenance techniques.
  • Special skills such as acetylene and electric welding, metal fabrication, carpentry and plumbing considered an asset.
  • Ability to operate and knowledge of safe use of power equipment.
  • Good communication skills, ability to work with minimal supervision and as a team player.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 Nova Scotia Drivers License.
  • Criminal Records Check verification is required as a condition of employment. Vulnerable sector check may also be required for those working with vulnerable populations.
  • Medical assessments including but not limited to physical, vision, and hearing tests may be required. The assessments must show the capacity of performing tasks of the classification. This will take place at a later date.
ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Emergency First Aid/Level A CPR & AED Training (Current)
  • WHMIS/GHS 2015
  • Nova Scotia Fall Protection Training
  • Power Operated Elevated Work Platform

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Skilled in the safe and efficient operation of small tools and equipment.
  • Ability to operator a variety of construction equipment, such as graders, loaders, and heavy trucks.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relations with employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of equipment, facilities, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of municipal infrastructure.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual tasks including lifting up to 75 lbs.
