The Highland Village Museum, a living history museum and cultural centre located in the heart of Cape Breton, is seeking a Community Engagement Intern through the Young Canada Works Building Careers in Heritage Internship Program. This role offers an exciting opportunity for a recent graduate passionate about cultural heritage, event planning, and community engagement to contribute to the promotion of Gaelic language, culture, and history.

The successful candidate will have a strong enthusiasm for community engagement and cultural tourism. They will represent Highland Village Museum in reengaging the local community, planning innovative events, and creating sustainable strategies for community outreach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan and host an open house for the museum's new Welcome Centre, coordinating logistics, promotions, and community outreach.
  • Conduct visitor exit interviews and analyze feedback to improve visitor experiences.
  • Research and develop a marketing plan for Highland Village Museum, drawing inspiration from similar organizations.
  • Compile findings into a Community Engagement Framework to guide future initiatives.
  • Represent the museum at local and regional events, fostering partnerships and promoting the museum's offerings.
Schedule and Availability:
Work Hours: 7 hours per day, 5 days a week (35 hours/week).
Duration: 26 weeks
Availability to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings as required.

Qualifications:
  • Recent graduate with a degree in museum studies, communications, tourism, event management, history, or a related field.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Instagram).
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and analytical skills.
  • A valid Vulnerable Sector Check and Criminal Record Check (to be submitted upon hiring).
  • Standard First Aid and CPR certification (preferred).
  • Ability to lift up to 25lbs and navigate stairs.
