Since 1956, Victoria Co-operative Fisheries Ltd. has harvested and processed a significant portion of the East Coast’s freshest and tastiest seafood.

Located in the pristine Northeast Highlands region of Cape Breton Island, this forward-thinking co-operative purchases locally harvested seafood from its’ members. Once processed, our products are shipped worldwide to many customers located in Japan, Vietnam, China and Hong Kong. We also ship a significant amount of product to the USA and within Canada

Victoria Co-operative Fisheries is the only active lobster processing facility on Cape Breton Island.

Job Description

Victoria Co-operative Fisheries is seeking Seafood Processing Workers (NOC 94142) for its 2026 season. Production workers will work in the production facility that converts the raw seafood product into a processed, finished, marketable product ready for sale in domestic and foreign markets. Production workers may be required to grade, wash, butcher, pack, weigh, case, label, and transport the product to the freezer. Product will be unloaded raw and processed into finished product and then loaded in freezers or on trucks.

Job Duties

  • Grade, wash, butcher, pack, weigh, case up, label, and transport the seafood product to the freezer
  • Cut, clean, and trim lobster, snow crab, and other crustaceans
  • Disjoint and remove meat from lobsters and other crustaceans
  • Operate machines to box and pack seafood products
  • Set up machines and perform corrective adjustments as needed
  • Check all boxed and packaged products for defects and ensure conformance to company standards
  • Unload raw product from truck
  • Load processed product in freezer or onto truck
  • Record production information such as quantity, weight, date, and type of products packaged
  • Must follow Victoria Co-operative Fisheries policies and safe work procedures including mandatory wearing of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
  • Other duties as needed, which may be assigned to meet production requirements

 

Employment Conditions

Start Date: April 1, 2026

  • Salary/wages: $19.00 per hour
  • Hours per week: 48-60 (Varies based on product availability and demand)
  • Shifts may run from 3-12 hours per day, and typically 5-7 days per week
  • Overtime rate per hour: $24.75 (1 ½ times the minimum wage (16.50 as of October 1st) per Nova Scotia Labour Standards’ exemption for Fishing Industry)
  • Season: mid-April to mid-December, depending on product availability and demand
  • Job Type: Full-time; Seasonal
  • Schedule: Fluctuating schedule; 3-12 hour shifts; Weekdays, weekends; Mornings, daytime, evenings
  • Benefits:
  • Vacation: 4% of gross wages per pay period; 3 days of unpaid sick leave; paid public holidays (if conditions are met)

 

Requirements and Qualifications

Personal qualifications:

  • Must be 16 years or older
  • Must be capable of standing for long periods of time
  • Must be able to lift, up to and including 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work in a busy, wet, noisy environment
  • Must be capable of repetitive work
  • Must be able to work well with fellow employees
  • Must not have any seafood allergies

Qualifications:

  • No formal education or experience required
  • On-the-job training available
  • No specific language requirements
